Dasha is Jyotish's timeline system. It divides life into planetary periods that are believed to colour different phases. Transit (gochar) looks at where planets are in the sky now, compared with your birth chart. A good reading uses both together.
For Saturn's specific long cycles, see Sade Sati and Dhaiya.
The most common system is the 120-year Vimshottari dasha, based on the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Each planet rules a period. Within it are sub-periods. Transits are layered on top.
Birth date, time and place. Mention any decision or time window you have in mind.
A clear timeline of phases, with a plain-language explanation of the traditional themes of each.
Helpful for: understanding why a phase may feel a certain way, and thinking about readiness. Limits: A dasha describes tendencies, not outcomes. No dasha makes a result certain.
Sooner or later, many people hear the sentence, your Shani dasha is running, usually from a relative at a family gathering, and usually without explanation. It can sound ominous, or reassuring, depending on who says it. A dasha analysis in Mumbai is a calm way of finding out what that sentence actually means in your own chart, and what the tradition says about the phase you are in.
Dasha is the timeline system of Jyotish. It divides life into planetary periods that are believed to colour different phases. Transit, or gochar, looks at where the planets are in the sky now compared with your birth chart. A good reading uses both together. At Sansthaan, we offer this as traditional guidance and reflection, never as a guarantee, held online for Mumbai and Thane.
A dasha is a planetary period. In the system most commonly used, each of the nine grahas takes a turn at ruling a stretch of your life, and the order and length of those stretches are fixed by tradition. The planet whose period is running is believed to bring its themes forward, as filtered through its placement and rulership in your chart.
This is why two people in a Saturn period may have quite different experiences. For one, Saturn may rule favourable houses and sit strongly, and the period may bring steady progress. For another, it may be afflicted and the same years may feel heavy. The dasha tells you whose turn it is. The chart tells you how that planet is placed.
The most widely used system is the Vimshottari dasha, a cycle of 120 years. It begins from the Moon's nakshatra at birth, among the 27 nakshatras, and that nakshatra decides which planet's period you are born into and how much of it remains. The nine periods vary in length, from 6 years for the Sun to 20 for Venus.
Each major period is the Mahadasha. It is divided into sub-periods, the Antardashas, and these in turn into Pratyantardashas. The finer the division, the more sensitive it is to birth time. Other dasha systems exist, and schools differ about them, but this page and our consultations follow Vimshottari unless a different system is clearly more suitable.
The Mahadasha sets the larger backdrop, often lasting many years. The Antardasha acts within it, shaping a particular chapter. The Pratyantardasha is a smaller phase still, sometimes describing the mood of a few months. Reading them together is like reading a year, a season and a week.
We look at the relationship between the lords. A sub-period lord that is friendly to the main lord may sit more easily than one that is not. We also look at the houses the lords rule and occupy, since these indicate which areas of life, such as work, family or health habits, are likely to come forward. This is described as tendency, never certainty.
Transits describe the present movement of planets against your birth chart. The slower planets, Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu, are given the most attention, because they remain in one sign for long periods and so colour whole phases. Transits are often read from the Moon sign, and also from the ascendant, depending on the school.
A dasha shows the backdrop and a transit shows what is passing over it. When a supportive dasha meets a supportive transit, the tradition reads this as an easier time. When they pull in different directions, we say so openly, and we explain which indication carries more weight in your chart. We do not publish daily transit data on this page.
One of the most useful parts of a session is seeing where the two indications meet. A period that looks demanding by dasha may be softened by a gentle transit, and an encouraging dasha may be tempered by a heavy one. Understanding this prevents both needless worry and overconfidence.
It also explains why friends with similar dashas may describe quite different years. Their transits, their charts and their circumstances differ. We therefore avoid sweeping statements. Instead, we explain the layers and offer a balanced view of the phase, so that you can plan realistically and keep your own judgement at the centre.
Saturn deserves special mention, because its cycles are long and often feared. The Shani Mahadasha lasts 19 years, and Saturn sub-periods occur within other dashas too. Sade Sati, the period when Saturn moves over the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your natal Moon, is a transit, not a dasha, and it is a separate subject.
For these cycles, our page on Sade Sati and Dhaiya goes into greater detail. In a dasha analysis, we simply place Saturn's period in your chart and ask whether it is well or poorly placed. Many people recall a Saturn phase as the time they matured and built lasting foundations, so we never treat it as a verdict.
This consultation suits people who want to understand the phase they are in, and anyone who has heard that a particular dasha is running and wants to know what it means. It also suits those who are considering a major step, such as a career change, a house, a marriage or a business, and who wish to understand how the timing looks in their chart.
It is not a way of fixing a date with certainty. It is a way of thinking about readiness. Many clients find that simply understanding the traditional themes of a period relieves a good deal of anxiety. Bring the decision or the time window you have in mind, and we will discuss it in that context.
Please share your birth date, time and place, and mention any decision or time window on your mind. An accurate birth time matters, because the Antardasha and Pratyantardasha boundaries shift with it. If you are unsure, ask us about birth time rectification first. Sessions are online, in English, Hindi or Marathi.
