The sixth day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Katyayani, the warrior form of the Goddess who slew the buffalo demon Mahishasura. She is regarded as a fierce protector and, in popular tradition, a goddess who blesses prayers for a suitable life partner.
Her Form
Katyayani rides a lion and has four arms. Her upper left hand holds a sword and her lower left hand a lotus, while the right hands show the blessing (abhaya) and boon-giving (varada) gestures. Her complexion is radiant and golden, and she is described as the fearless daughter of a sage.
Why She Is Called Katyayani
She is said to have taken birth as the daughter of Sage Katyayana, who performed severe penance to have the Goddess as his daughter. In the Devi Mahatmya tradition, the gods contributed their radiance to form the Goddess to defeat Mahishasura, and the sage was the first to worship her, which gave her the name Katyayani.
The Gopis and Katyayani Vrat
The Bhagavata Purana describes how the young Gopis of Vrindavan observed a month-long vrat to Katyayani to win Lord Krishna as their husband. This is why Katyayani has become associated with prayers for a good marriage, and many unmarried women worship her on this day.
Mantra
A well-known verse in her praise is:
चन्द्रहासोज्ज्वलकरा शार्दूलवरवाहना। कात्यायनी शुभं दद्याद्देवी दानवघातिनी॥
It means: "May Goddess Katyayani, whose hand shines with a moon-bright sword, who rides a great lion and who destroys the demons, grant auspiciousness." A simple mantra is "Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah".
Bhog and Worship
- Bhog: honey (shahad) is traditionally offered, and some families offer sweets made with honey.
- Offerings: red flowers, especially red roses or hibiscus, fruit and a lamp.
- Practice: prayers, reading the Durga Saptashati, and fasting as per family custom.
Astrological Association
In popular astrology, Katyayani is linked with Jupiter (Brihaspati) and the Ajna (third-eye) chakra. Devotees pray to her for help with delays in marriage and for clarity and courage. This is a traditional belief and not a scriptural rule. For delays in marriage, a proper chart reading by an astrologer is more meaningful, and you may read Vastu tips for delay in marriage for a Vastu perspective.
The colour of the day, the bhog offered and the planet associated with each form of the Goddess differ between regions, families and printed calendars, and from year to year. Follow your own family or temple tradition. Planet associations are popular astrological beliefs and not scriptural rules.
The Message of the Day
Katyayani teaches courage and righteous action. She is the Goddess who fights evil, and she is also the mother who answers a sincere prayer. Continue with Maa Kalaratri.
